Having studied both Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Design, and after 20+ years of combining them, I believe they are mutually interdependent when it comes to successful product development. The ‘design’ and ‘engineering’ should arise symbiotically, fed by a fertile mix of user research and product testing, with a sprinkling of management to ensure that everything matures in good time.
